The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is an international organization of 35,000 general dentists committed to professional development and continuing dental education in order to provide the best possible care to their patients. All AGD members must remain current with advances in the profession to provide quality patient treatment. A general dentist who is a "Fellow" in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) has been recognized by other general dentists as a leader and an example to other dentists of the importance of quality continuing dental education to patient care. A general dentist who has earned the designation "Master" of the Academy of General Dentistry (MAGD) – a big step up from Fellowship - has completed a structured and rigorous set of requirements involving all the dental disciplines. Both Fellows and Masters have accepted the charge to keep abreast of advances in dentistry for the benefit of patients and the betterment of dentistry. They serve as mentors and leaders to other dentists pursuing continuing dental education. They set examples in their communities with their hard work, concern and involvement.

To earn a Fellowship Award, a dentist must earn a minimum of 500 approved continuing dental education credits and pass a comprehensive 400-question examination and be an Academy of General Dentistry member for five continuous years.

To attain Mastership, members must first be Fellows in the Academy of General Dentistry. Then they must earn an additional 600 approved continuing education credits, meeting minimum requirements in certain dental disciplines, of which 400 hours are hands-on-courses. Thus, a Master of the Academy of General Dentistry has taken a minimum of 1,100 hours of continuing education. A Master has studied 16 disciplines in dentistry, such as periodontics, orthodontics and implants. Fellows and Masters of the Academy of General Dentistry continue in a lifelong pursuit of continuing education to provide the highest quality of dental care to patients. The award symbolizes the professional responsibility of general dentists to remain current in their profession and reminds each member of the dental profession to continue to learn new techniques for their dental practice. These are awards, however, and should not be confused with post-graduate degrees or certification. Every dentist who applies for the Fellowship or Mastership award has their application reviewed by the AGD Council on Dental Education to assure that the high standards of the Academy of General Dentistry are met. The Academy is very proud of all of its members who must take at least 75 hours of continuing dental education every three years, and especially proud of its members who have made the commitment to pursue these awards. When a dentist has achieved the Fellowship Award or Mastership Award, you can be assured that they are dedicated to providing the finest care in general dentistry.

Dr. Joseph Goth, DMD, MD

Dr. Joseph Goth, DMD, MD
Dr. Joseph Goth, DMD, MD is a double degree Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon who has worked in the field of dental implantology for over 30+ years and has build his stellar reputation and expertise, upon his unparalleled level of skill, and a wealth of compassion. Deeply committed to improving the quality of his patients’ lives, he treats those afflicted with ailments, diseases, and injuries of the oral and facial regions. He takes great satisfaction in restoring his patients’ smiles, and their normal oral functions, after dental extractions. Moreover, he acknowledges the trust that they place in him to accomplish these objectives. Treating people of all ages, Dr. Goth pays special attention to the needs of his elderly patients, many of whom suffer from multiple medical problems.

He is highly skilled in the placement of dental implants, and performing the bone-grafting procedures that may be necessary in preparation for their insertion. Dr. Goth is highly proficient in the extraction of wisdom teeth, and dentoalveolar surgery. He is proud that his patients rarely have major post-operative complaints, and in turn experience minimal downtime. Another advantage that Dr. Goth’s patients enjoy is a wide selection of anesthetic alternatives, such as complete general anesthesia, conscious sedation, IV sedation, and local anesthesia.

He is one of only a few doctors in North America to offer low-level laser therapy (LLLT), which decreases pain and swelling following his surgical procedures. It’s also one of the many surgical and non-surgical treatments he offers patients with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), as it helps control the pain of TMJ, and other arthritic and muscular disorders. In addition, LLLT treats healing disorders of the jaw following dental extractions. LLLT also, can be a therapeutic aid to enhance healing for those patients who suffer oral complications from osteopenia and osteonecrosis, due to the intake of oral biphosphonates which can inhibit post-operative healing.

Among his many impressive achievements, besides earning his DMD from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Goth successfully pursued a double degree, and received an M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and is licensed as a physician and a dentist in Pennsylvania and Florida.
